ABDOMINOPLASTY

Abdominoplasty, also known as Tummy Tuck, is a procedure to remove the excess, redundant skin and tightens the muscles of the abdomen to give it a flat and firm look. A flat looking well toned abdomen is what many of us strive for and regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle may help us achieve that goal. But certain patients may have an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging; A Tummy tuck surgery is especially helpful in such patients and gives very gratifying results.

About the Procedure

Abdominoplasty surgery is mostly combined with Liposuction, and the surgery is thus more appropriately known as a Lipoabdominoplasty. The procedure is usually done under General anesthesia or may be performed under Spinal/Epidural Anesthesia also. Liposuction helps in removal of the excess fat in abdomen and flanks and Abdominoplasty removes the excess, loose, hanging skin over the lower abdomen. The abdominal muscles are then tightened in the midline which helps to reduce the upper abdominal bulge further. Some patients, with only limited skin laxity in the lower abdomen may be candidates for a Mini Abdominoplasty

Candidates for the Procedure

Patients who have had surgeries for, or otherwise, have had massive weight loss and have loose hanging skin over their abdomen, patients with frequent weight fluctuations, and females post pregnancy, who have lost contour and shape of their abdomen are candidates for the procedure. Abdominoplasty is, by no means, a therapy for weight loss.

After the Surgery

The patient usually stays in hospital for a period of 24-48 hours. They are allowed to walk the next day after surgery, slightly bent forward. The patients have to wear a corset shaped compression garment for 4-6 weeks after the procedure and avoid heavy, strenuous activity for the same period. Although some correction of the sagging, flabby lower abdomen is noticeable, results may be visible immediately after lipoabdominoplasty, but the result may be still masked by swelling which will gradually reduce over time. Once the healing is complete and the swelling has completely disappeared, will the final results of a flatter, firmer abdomen with its improved contours be visible
