Liposuction is the procedure to remove unwanted deposits of fat from the body. This is one of the most common aesthetic procedures carried out by plastic surgeons worldwide. The procedure helps give the patient an immense boost to their self image. Contrary to popular belief, Liposuction is NOT a treatment for obesity or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. The primary aim of the surgery is “inch loss” and a better contour of the body and not Weight loss.
About the Procedure
Procedure is carried out under Local anesthesia with sedation or General anesthesia, depending upon the site and amount of fat to be removed. Tiny incisions are made hidden in the natural skin folds of the body, the solution to emulsify the fat infiltrated and liquidized fat suctioned out from the body. A customized compression garment is put on the patient after the procedure to control swelling, reduce fluid collection and allow the skin to drape well to the changed body shape. This needs to be worn for 4-6 weeks. The patient is up and about immediately after the surgery, although heavy activity is to be avoided for a few weeks.
Candidates for the Procedure
Liposuction is ideally suited for patients who have deposits of fat which are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a procedure to get rid of morbid obesity ;patients who are within 30% of their ideal body weight, having good skin tone are candidates for the procedure. Certain patients may be better suited for a Liposculpture rather than a liposuction- a procedure which involves not only removing fat by liposuction but also adding it to the “right places” to improve the body’s overall contour and giving it an improved shape.
After The Surgery
The patients are advised to wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks. As the swelling settles over a period of weeks and the skin re-drapes over the new contours of the body, the results are better appreciable. The patients are encouraged to carry out muscle toning exercises and proper healthy diet to augment the results.
